Pizza enthusiasts across the nation are gearing up for a delicious celebration on March 14. What makes this date so special? March 14, or 3/14, is National Pi Day—an homage to the mathematical constant Pi (π), which represents the ratio of a circle’s circumference to its diameter, approximately 3.14159. While the day honors the brilliance of mathematics, it’s also a perfect excuse for pizza lovers to revel in their favorite cheesy, saucy delights. Thus, National Pi Day has fittingly come to represent pizza pies, uniting the worlds of both math and tasty pizza.

A Slice of History
Did you know that pizza has a history almost as rich and cheesy as our pies? The modern pizza we all know and love originated in Naples, Italy, in the late 18th century. But the concept of topping flatbreads with tasty ingredients goes back thousands of years. Fast forward to today, and Tommy’s Pizza and Subs has perfected the art of pizza-making right here in Santee.

Over the years, Pi Day has been celebrated in a variety of creative and fun ways. Here are a few examples:
- Pi Memorization Contests: People challenge themselves and others to memorize as many digits of Pi as possible. In case you didn’t know, Pi is an irrational number, which means its decimal representation never terminates or repeats. The current world record for memorizing the it is over 70,000 digits!
- Pie Eating Contests: Because there’s really no better way to celebrate Pi Day than by eating delicious pizza pies, there are numerous pie eating and pie making contests around the country. What will it be, something sweet or savory, or perhaps a wild and wacky combination of both? Whether you prefer a classic pepperoni pizza, a decadent dessert pie, or an adventurous mix of flavors, there’s sure to be a contest and/or a pie just waiting for you to dive in and enjoy!
- Pi-Themed Crafts: Some get crafty and create Pi-themed art, decorations, and even jewelry to show off their love for pizza.
