World Pizza Day is February 9. It’s a day that resonates with every pizza lover’s heart the whole world over. While we can’t wait to share the joy of a slice with our valued customers, the truth is when you’re an Italian restaurant like Tommy’s Pizza and Subs, every day is a celebration of pizza.
A Day Just for Pizza
Pizza is an iconic dish, originating from Italy — a true global sensation, loved by people of all ages. Pizza’s roots trace back to Naples, Italy, where the Margherita pizza—adorned with tomatoes, mozzarella, and basil—was created in honor of Queen Margherita in the late 19th century. Since then, pizza has evolved into a blank canvas of sorts, with toppings ranging from traditional to unconventional to satisfy every palate.
While the origins of World Pizza Day are a bit of a mystery, some say it’s meant to honor the feast day of Anthony Abbot, the patron saint of pizzaioli and protector of animals. February 9 became the official date of World Pizza Day in 2000 and it’s been celebrated on that day ever since. Regardless of its provenance, it’s a day when pizza lovers around the world unite to celebrate the diverse flavors, textures, and cultural significance of pizza.
Embracing Global Pizza Culture
World Pizza Day’s global focus is no surprise. Pizza is truly exceptional in its ability to adapt to diverse cultural tastes and culinary creativity.
- In the United States, the classic pepperoni pizza is a staple at countless pizzerias.
- Seafood-topped pizzas are popular in Japan.
- Indian cuisine brings a unique twist with spicy tandoori chicken or paneer toppings.
- Each year, more than 5 billion pizzas are sold worldwide, with 3 billion sold in the US alone. Of course, that number does not factor in homemade pizzas, so the amount of pizza consumed is likely much higher.
- Surprisingly, Norway tops the list of the most pizza consumed annually per capita with about 11 pounds of pizza per person.
